A week before delivery

Kramer in Eindhoven is an example company, but every workshop knows a rush order landing next to a drawing change.

  1. Bram messages from the workshop

The schedule is on the board. Nobody knows whether there is certified steel in stock for two extra frames.

  2. The third reply arrives, with drawing v3

The estimate, quote, cutting file and WPS all have to be redone.

RE: RE: RE: enquiry for 12 stair frames
Hi, as discussed, drawing attached. It'll be 12 instead of 10, delivery week 43 if possible. Regards, Peter

  3. A note next to the keyboard

The quote has to be revised, but who does it and when is not written down anywhere.

Call! Kok wants 12 frames not 10. Change quote?!
  4. Sven is back from a fitting job

Without that job sheet there is no job costing and no invoice, and the customer sign-off is blank.

Where an order gets stuck

One drawing change and everything starts again

The estimate is in Excel, the quote in Word, and the cutting files and WPS are separate. If the customer changes something, it is all redone by hand.

One order from enquiry to invoice, where the estimate, production order and job sheet follow on from each other automatically.

Who is on the laser tomorrow?

The schedule is on a board in the workshop. A rush order or a welder off sick, and the office is running back and forth.

A workshop schedule that follows from the orders, showing who is on which machine.

Which drawing is the final one?

Drawing v3 FINAL is in an email thread, the 3.1 certificate in a folder and the WPS on the welding coordinator's PC.

For each order, the right version of the drawing, the certificates and the WPS, in the workshop too.

Are we actually making money on this order?

Job costing only happens once the job sheet is back, and by then the hours come from memory.

For each order, the estimate next to the actual hours and materials, while the work is still in progress.

Drawings come from your CAD, as they do now

The CAD and machine software keeps supplying drawings and cutting files, as it does now. If you use Ridder iQ, MKG or Bemet, we start by looking at what already works and only build what is missing.

  • Exact or AFASthe accounting, with the invoice in it
  • CAD and machine softwaredrawings and cutting files
  • WhatsApp Businessquick questions from the workshop
  • your own estimating figuresrecorded in the estimate

Questions from the workshop

A system like that is too big for us.

That is why we only build the steps that cause you problems. A workshop of eight gets a different system from one of eighty.

The lads in the workshop won't key in their hours.

Then it is one tap per order, on a terminal or a phone in the workshop. Without those hours there is no job costing, so it has to be quicker than a note on paper.

Every order is different.

True, but every order still comes down to materials, operations and hours. We record those, and the rest stays flexible.

Does this also work for sheet metal or machining?

Yes. Structural steelwork under EN 1090 comes with welding coordination, WPSs and traceable material. For sheet metal from DXF or STEP files, estimating quickly and accurately is half the job. For subcontract machining, lead times, machine hours and repeat orders are what count.

What does it cost?

One fixed price, agreed after the design. It depends on what we build first, whether that is just the order from enquiry to invoice, or the workshop hours and the job costing as well. We only start building once you agree.

From the office to the workshop

We spend a morning with you and watch how an enquiry comes in, how it is priced up and where it gets stuck. Afterwards we set out what we would build.
